(More customer reviews)While these 9-LED flashlights superficially resemble the ones sold by eToolsCity for about $6 each (Super-Bright 9 LED Heavy-Duty Compact Aluminum Flashlight - Gunmetal Silver), they are smaller and flimsier.The manufacturer is not identified anywhere on the packaging or the product, other than "made in China".
The pack I received in early June 2008 contained two different designs, one with a case 3-1/8 inches long and one with a case 3-3/8 inches long.I received four of the smaller ones and eight of the larger ones.Of the photos shown for the 12-pack on Amazon, the picture of the four colored lights seems to be of the smaller ones and the single black flashlight is probably one of the larger ones.
The four smaller flashlights were extremely cheaply made, especially the plastic internal battery holders, which hold the three AAA batteries that power the LEDs.In three of these four, only one or two of the nine LEDs would light.In the fourth, five LEDs lit.In most cases the LEDs were aligned poorly with their lenses, which reduced their apparent brightness.
The remaining eight flashlights (3-3/8 inches long) felt stronger and were much better made: all nine LEDs lit in seven of the eight flashlights of this type (eight in the other), and they provided a very satisfying, bright near-white beam.
The straps for all 12 flashlights are too small to be useful.I can barely fit three fingers through the loop -- certainly not my whole hand.You have to attach the strap to the case by threading a metal ring through a small hole in the case.This design is flimsy and the ring doesn't slide freely in the hole, so the ring sticks out from the case, vulnerable to catching or breaking.
None of the 12 lights was as solid as the model sold by eToolsCity, which has a case 3-5/8 inches long and a longer, better-designed strap that you attach to the case by threading a flexible loop through the hole.
I give the 12-pack two stars because the middle-size flashlights seem functional, though of marginal quality.Hey, what do you expect for less than $2.00 each?The small ones are junk and deserve no stars at all.I'm guessing that if I bought another pack of 12 I would get a random assortment, and I wouldn't want to receive mostly the small ones.
All in all, I recommend you pass on these and spend two or three times as much for the Super-Bright 9 LED Heavy-Duty Compact Aluminum Flashlight - Gunmetal Silver.
